The Taxman Cometh - A Business Masterclass
The Taxman Cometh - A Business Masterclass
The Dean Park Hotel, Kirkcaldy
Thursday 29th April 2010, 4.00pm for 4.30pm start
From the 1st of April 2010 officers of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have significant new powers to obtain information from taxpayers and to carry out inspections of business premises. The new powers can be exercised by HMRC in any situation in which they wish to check the ‘tax position' of a person or business.
Professor Alex McDougall (BSc CA CTA TEP AIIT FRSA) is Senior Tax Partner at Haines Watts Kirkcaldy and Edinburgh and is a Chartered Accountant, a Chartered Tax Adviser, a Registered Trust and Estate Practitioner and an Associate of the Institute of Indirect Taxation. He is a former Convener of the Tax Practices Committee of ICAS, is Convener of its VAT Committee and a member of the Capital Taxes Sub-Committee. He represents ICAS on the Indirect Tax Working Party of the Fédération des Expèrts Comptables Européens. He also represents ICAS on the Residence & Domicile (FA 2008) Stakeholder Group set up by HMRC and the SCIO Working Group set up by the Scottish Government. He is based in Edinburgh having joined as a Tax Partner in 1999.
This is a unique opportunity to hear from someone who has significant expertise in this often confusing subject matter - a subject that Alex has a flair for making interesting and amusing. In addition, Professor McDougall has had an extremely successful career and we will hear what has influenced him most and what the key milestones in his progression have been.
This is the first in a series of ‘Business Masterclasses' and on this occasion we will examine the new powers of HMRC, the rights of taxpayers and the career experiences of Professor McDougall.
Registration will begin at 4.00pm with the presentation by Professor McDougall commencing at 4.30pm prompt. This will be followed by questions and discussion and a buffet with light refreshments will be available from approximately 5.30pm.
