Learning Reaps Rewards for Graham

27th April 2016

A Fife College student has been promoted in his job and nominated for an award thanks to the work he has been doing on his Management course.

Graham Ryder, 35 from Kingseat, was nominated for the Offshore Achievement Awards by his company, WEB Rigging Services Ltd, based in Inverkeithing.

Graham is currently studying the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership at Fife College’s Carnegie Conference Centre, alongside working as a Business Support Manager. His company recognised he had leadership potential and therefore supported him to study for the CMI Diploma. Since starting with the company two years ago Graham has been promoted twice on merit, nominated for an individual employee award and had recommendations from others in the sector.

Said Graham: “I began the CMI qualification in August 2015 and the course has definitely helped me to develop my management and leadership skills. The work based project has enabled me to look at opportunities in the marketplace due to the downturn in the oil and gas sector including developing the company’s online activities. I have also made proactive changes to the workplace related to learning from my CMI course.

“I was delighted to be nominated for the Offshore Achievement Awards in Aberdeen. It was the 30th anniversary of the event and there was strong competition. I found out recently that I have not been included as a finalist but the nomination itself along with my promotion was a great achievement which I am very proud of.

“Long term I hope to further develop my skills and continue to make a positive difference in the workplace.”

Lecturer Pamela Bennett said: “Winning an award and gaining a promotion is great news and I am delighted that Graham’s College course has contributed to his success alongside his own hard work.

“Graham works for an industry which has been heavily affected by the changes in the oil and gas market and he has recognised that his studies can make a positive impact on the role he plays to support his company which in turn is benefitting his own career prospects.

“Studying alongside working full-time can be challenging, however, Graham is proof that it is all worthwhile.”
