Fife College Staff Kick-off New Term with Learning and Teaching Event

19th August 2016

Staff from Fife College came together to begin their new term with a special Learning and Teaching event organised just for them.

The event was held to launch the College’s new Learning and Teaching Strategy which will drive forward all College plans to ensure that Fife College offers high quality learning and teaching alongside a great range of courses and activities.

Over 500 staff attended the event which was run simultaneously at three Fife College campuses; Halbeath in Dunfermline, St Brycedale in Kirkcaldy and Stenton in Glenrothes.

Guest speaker, author David Price OBE, attended the Halbeath event and his talk was streamed live to staff at the other two campuses. David gave an interesting insight into ‘going open’ based on his recent book ‘Open: How We’ll Work, Live and Learn in the Future’ which looks into the real implications of digital technologies for how we live and learn in the 21st century.

Said David: “I was delighted to be able to attend this event today and hope that my talk has inspired staff to think out of the box with regards to learning and teaching.

“The future of how we learn is becoming more complex as the way we work changes. Statistics show that by 2020, 50% of all jobs will be freelance and so students will require flexible skills to help them succeed.

“It is great to see that Fife College, through their new strategy and events such as this, are open to change and to maximising the talents of their staff to benefit students, their lives and future careers.”

Hugh Logan, Fife College Principal, was delighted to launch the strategy to College staff on the day and to welcome David to the event. Said Hugh:Our new Learning and Teaching Strategy is an extremely important piece of work which outlines our vision and plans to ensure our students are equipped with the skills for learning, life and work and are ready to progress when they leave Fife College. Today’s event marks an important milestone for our College as we focus on the themes which will help ensure we meet our goals to deliver a high quality learning and teaching.

“David’s talk was extremely interesting and thought provoking and tied in very well to the key themes of our new strategy, helping staff embrace the main elements of the document. The event also allowed staff to ask questions and feedback their ideas.

“This month has been an exciting time for Fife College as we see the opening of our new Campus in Levenmouth and consultation take place for a new Campus in Dunfermline, alongside the completion of a range of other improvements to our campuses throughout Fife. Getting the resources right is important but it is also vital that our vision of what we are here for and what we want to achieve is updated and developed to match industry and our learners’ needs - we are confident that this new strategy will help us achieve these aims.”

David Price has a wealth of experience as a writer, consultant and trainer and has been awarded an OBE for services to education. He is a Senior Associate at the Innovation Unit, in England, and Director of Educational Arts. He has given talks all over the world, and written extensively.
