Edinburgh Airport Makes Scottish Business Pledge

31st March 2016

Edinburgh Airport has today made a commitment to the Scottish Business Pledge - a partnership to champion inclusive growth and fair employment practices.

All of Edinburgh Airport Limited’s employees are paid at least the Living Wage and there are no employees on zero hour contracts.

With over 11.1 million passengers last year, Scotland’s busiest airport plays a crucial role in both Edinburgh and Scotland’s international standing, not only as an airport but also a large employer.

Commenting, Edinburgh Airport’s Chief Executive Gordon Dewar, said:

“At Edinburgh Airport the staff are our number one resource. Our hard working team deserve to be appropriately paid for their skills and their commitment.

“We have staff on full time and part time contracts as well as permanent and temporary contracts depending on circumstances - but we see no reason, need or advantage to introduce the use of zero hour contracts.

“We are working with existing suppliers and aim to bring our partners across the campus to the same level by 2020. We will do this as we retender contracts by encouraging and incentivising all our partners to apply similar conditions.

“It is fitting that we have achieved this accreditation during Scottish Tourism Week. A recent study by Visit Scotland showed that 56 per cent of passengers flying into Scotland arrived at Edinburgh, and as we continue to grow we continue to create more business links, jobs and growth for the country.

“We’re not just an airport but also a large employer and a positive economic contributor to the nation; our aim is not to just be a great airport but also to be a great business. To do this, we support initiatives where we can – and we aim to build on our reputation as being ‘Where Scotland meets the World’”

Deputy First Minister John Swinney said:

“The Scottish Business Pledge is a shared mission between the Scottish Government and businesses, with the goal of boosting productivity, competitiveness, employment, fair work and inclusive growth.

“By making their Pledge, more than 230 companies have demonstrated their commitment to shared values and to delivering them through their actions and future plans, and I would like to congratulate Edinburgh Airport Limited on joining this initiative.”
