29th June 2018

Fife Council is delighted to have been shortlisted by the UK Government, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in this year’s Enterprising Britain Awards.

The shortlisted Fife Council submission highlights the achievements of joint working by the Council’s Economy, Planning & Employability and Education & Children’s Services, with Fife Economy Partnership.

This has resulted in the successful delivery of an innovative Enterprise Learning Journey for school pupils, young adults and business leaders.

New business infrastructure investment has also been secured through Fife Task Force, including the creation of an Enterprise Hub in Glenrothes.

The Council submission also highlighted the strength of Glenrothes, which has undergone significant enterprise led regeneration, transitioning from a period of economic challenge to one with a strong business base and industrial innovation.

Reflecting on being shortlisted for an award in the ‘Promoting Entrepreneurial Spirit’ category, the Fife Economy Partnership vice chair, Stephen Edmiston, said: "The learning journey in Fife has grown since 2010, to one that is now uniquely linking with employment pathways for the young workforce; and empowering future business leaders. The Fife Economy Partnership (FEP) continues to support Fife Council and encourage continued private sector collaboration.”

Bob Garmory, Chair of Developing the Young Workforce Fife, added:Fife Council’s Culture of Enterprise Framework is aligned with Education & Children’s Services and the Scottish Government’s Curriculum for Excellence. This links the school curriculum, employability and local businesses, and provides young people with the tools to develop enterprise skills, including using initiative, calculated risk taking, innovation, problem solving, creativity and confidence.

Fife Council’s co-leaders, Cllr David Alexander and Cllr David Ross also welcomed the shortlisting, commenting: “This shortlisting recognises that Fife Council is committed to improving the prospects for our young workforce and in supporting the growth of enterprise across Fife. “

If successful within the category shortlist, the submission made by Fife Council will also be considered for the prestigious title of "Most Enterprising Place in Britain". Two of the winners will be selected as the UK entries for the European Enterprise Promotion Awards. The awards are expected to be announced by 30 June 2018.

The Enterprising Britain Awards are part of the government’s drive to support entrepreneurial activity in the UK. Managed by Investment in Young People on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the awards celebrate the work of public sector and government-backed organisations that support and encourage entrepreneurialism across the UK.
