Your Workforce is Your Wealth - Fife Seminar

15th January 2020

The second ‘Your Workforce is Your WealthFife seminar will take place on Thursday 06 February 2020.

The aim of the seminar is for company senior leaders and HR managers to find out why it is so important to take care of employee’s mental wellbeing and to gain confidence in knowing how to create a mentally healthy workplace. This is also an opportunity to engage with the range of support already available to employers in Fife.

It is no coincidence the seminar is planned for ‘Time to Talk’ day. We would like to capitalise on the opportunity to get as many people as possible talking and being more open about mental health on this day.

MSP Clare Haughey, Minister for Mental Health will join the event to talk about the Scottish Government’s Mental Health Strategy and why this agenda is so important.

Chances are you, or someone you work with, is affected by mental health issues. According to See Me 35% of Scots have either personally experienced or been close to someone who has experienced stigma or discrimination because of their mental health problems.

‘Thriving at Work’, the Stevenson/Farmer Review estimates that across the UK 500,000 people with long-term mental health conditions lose their job each year.

The Mental Health Foundation estimate that around 17.5% of the working age population have symptoms of a common mental health problem.

In Fife this means that mental health issues are affecting over 40,000 16 to 64 year olds at any one time.

The cost to business is significant with estimates of an average of around £1,300 per employee per year.

The good news is that there is lots of support out there, and with a few simple steps, employers can cut those costs by 30% and, with a small investment of time and money, they can be reduced further still.

More importantly these steps will improve workforce wellbeing and could reduce the impact of mental health issues on people’s daily lives.

Cllr. Altany Craik, Convener - Economy, Tourism. Strategic Planning & Transportation Committee said “I’m delighted to be a part of the second Your Workforce is Your Wealth Seminar. It is so important for workplaces to feel confident to support their staff with mental health challenges and events like this are great for starting the conversation.”

The event will be hosted at the Carnegie Conference Centre and is being supported by Clare Haughey MSP, Minister for Mental Health, Paul Sheerin, Scottish Engineering and our very own Fife Chamber member John Penman of Fife Fabrication.
