At Crosbie Matthew, they are well aware that the last few months have been very difficult for many of you. To lose a loved one is challenging, but particularly so at this time of pandemic with restrictions on the format and size of funeral services. Despite these challenges, they have been truly humbled by the acceptance shown by their clients and would like to thank everyone for bearing with them while working within these limitations.

Unbreakable community spirit With funerals initially limited to immediate family, we observed kindness and compassion on a new level, with neighbours, friends and colleagues lining the streets to acknowledge the funeral cortege.

And, in what started as a gesture by members of Dalgety Parish Church, growing numbers of Fifers have been knitting pairs of matching hearts for those who were unable to view their loved one prior to the funeral. One is placed in the coffin and the other given to the family to keep. This generosity has now extended into the wider community, with many knitters handing in hearts across our four funeral homes.

Freda Anderson (80) said, “I saw a social media post about Dalgety Bay’s parishioners knitting the hearts and wanted to help. I’ve reached a good age and am still healthy so I’m grateful for that but felt so sad for those who couldn’t say goodbye to their loved ones. It’s been a real joy and privilege to help.”

Sheila Matthew, Managing Director said, “There is no doubt that losing a loved one during lockdown places additional stress and upset on everyone involved. However, families are showing real strength at this time, managing the best they can in these extra difficult circumstances. It has been so heartening to see this but also to observe communities coming together to show their support for those affected, or to pay their own respects. I’m also especially proud of my staff who have shown real commitment while working at this time to help families while putting their own health at risk in the process.”

Easing of Restrictions As we exceed 100 days in lockdown, the rules affecting funerals are changing.

All of their four premises, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Dalgety Bay and Rosyth, are now open.

Sheila continued, "We can now organise funerals by phone, video conferencing, or in our spacious premises observing social distancing. Families can now have up to 20 people present at cremations and burials and the crematoria are offering live streaming, available to watch live or up to 28 days after the service.

In addition, we can now provide family with limousines. Although later than planned due to the pandemic, we now have a new hearse and two limousines recently added to our fleet with screens in place between the driver and back seat passengers.

With Gardens of Remembrance, florists and some hotels having re-opened, now may also be the time to consider a memorial service to celebrate the life of your loved one.
