Let’s Break It Down: How to Do a Marketing SWOT Analysis
A Quick Guide to SWOT Analysis for Digital Marketing!
When it comes to digital marketing, knowing what’s working and what’s not is important. It’s no longer enough to just show up online. You need to understand where you stand, what you can improve, and where the real opportunities lie.
So, how do you do it?
I’m sure you’ve heard of a SWOT Analysis, and that’s exactly what we’re going to use to break down your strategy, uncover your strengths, and address the areas holding you back for this week’s Inside Track.
Let’s dive in!
What is a SWOT analysis?

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This strategy is a helpful tool to evaluate not just the overall health of your business but also the performance of your digital campaigns.
How to conduct a SWOT analysis

Now, it’s time to learn how to perform a SWOT analysis! To make things easier, let’s say you’ve just launched a brand-new website and want to understand how it's performing.
Step 1: Set a clear objectiveWhat are you evaluating? Is it your entire digital strategy, a single campaign, or your website performance? Define what you're assessing to keep things focused.
Step 2: List your Strengths (Internal, Positive)
Ask: What are we doing well?
Examples:
- Your site is mobile-friendly and loads quickly.
- You’ve got clear branding and a sleek design.
- You’ve already published a few SEO-optimised blogs.
Step 3: Identify your Weaknesses (Internal, Negative)
Ask: Where are we falling short?
Examples:
- Low traffic and not ranking yet on search engines.
- You don’t have a strong social media presence.
- No newsletter sign-up or email marketing in place.
Step 4: Explore Opportunities (External, Positive)
Ask: What external trends or tools can we take advantage of?
Examples:
- New trends in your niche that you can blog about.
- Growing TikTok user base.
- Partnership or influencer marketing potential
Step 5: Watch out for Threats (External, Negative)
Ask: What challenges could harm our performance?
Examples:
- Bigger competitors with established authority.
- Constant algorithm changes impacting your visibility.
- Budget constraints limiting ad spend or content production.
Step 6: Review, analyse, and get ready for action!
Based on the results, you'll know which area to prioritise and you can update your digital marketing strategy accordingly!
Final tips for an effective SWOT

You’ve finally done your SWOT analysis—great! And to make sure you're doing an effective SWOT, here are some bonus tips to keep in mind:
✔ Work with your team. Get feedback from different points of view so you can understand your brand's strengths and challenges better.
✔ Don’t be vague and dig deeper when doing your SWOT. What exactly makes your brand stand out? Likewise, don't hold back from listing your weaknesses and threats. The more honest you are, the more useful your analysis will be.
✔ Always back your insights with actual data, whether that’s from Google Analytics, customer feedback, or SEO tools. This keeps your SWOT grounded in facts, not guesses.
✔ Review regularly. Digital marketing is always changing, so make it a habit to review and update your SWOT every few months, especially after big campaigns or launches.
