Developing the Young Workforce

What is Developing the Young Workforce?

Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) is the Scottish Government’s Youth Employment strategy, operating across 21 regional groups in Scotland created to ignite opportunities for young people and help prepare them for the world of work.

The programme was established following a report by Sir Ian Wood, businessman, philanthropist and founder of the Wood Group, a leading company in the oil and gas industry. The report supported the notion that all young people are entitled to develop skills relevant to future employment. The report identified school years as the most effective period to prepare young people for the working world. The Scottish Government responded by initialising Developing the Young Workforce, a school-employer partnership dedicated to skill development in Scotland for those aged between 16 and 24.

What do we do?

DYW Fife facilitates meaningful partnerships between business and education to ignite opportunities for young people in Fife and better prepare them for their future careers.

Working with our networks and partners, we bring together local schools, colleges and businesses to offer skills development and learning opportunities, advice and support for young people to flourish as they progress into the world of work.

The primary aims of the programme are as follows:

  • To Boost Employment and Work Experience
  • To Develop Career and Employability Skills
  • To Strengthen Education – Business Partnerships
  • To Enhance Curriculum Pathways

Developing the Young Workforce - Fife Chamber of Commerce

To help develop these relationships, Amanda Liddell has joined Fife Chamber as DYW Business Engagement Executive, who works very closely with DYW Fife and the DYW School Coordinators.

Amanda’s role is primarily employer engagement, speaking to all employers about DYW and the ways in which their businesses can support the programme. Whether it is a career/industry talk or an apprenticeship, Amanda will connect the employer with the school.
