Artificial Intelligence (AI) may seem like a niche area of technology, primarily aimed at larger corporations.

However, as we move further into the digital age, AI solutions like OpenAI's ChatGPT are becoming increasingly accessible and valuable to small and medium-sized enterprises.

Perhaps you've heard of ChatGPT, or maybe it's a new term. Either way, this advanced AI model can revolutionise the way your business operates, streamlining processes and freeing up human resources.

In this week's edition of Inside Track, I will explore the untapped potential of ChatGPT, giving practical advice on using this cutting-edge technology to enhance your business operations.

The magic of prompt engineering

While many businesses use ChatGPT for customer service, lead generation, and marketing, it is still a question of whether the AI language model is being used to its full extent.

There are many ways to use ChatGPT, from having a conversation to asking it to act as your personal assistant. However, if you really want to get the most out of this game-changing technology you need to understand one key thing: Creating expert prompts.

A prompt is the set of instructions you give to the AI tool (in this case ChatGPT) so as to receive a desired output. This output could be a list of ideas, an analysis of a text or a full-length article. But the quality, precision and accuracy of the output will fully depend on the prompt that you use.

Creating the right type of prompts for your desired output is known as prompt engineering. By mastering the art of prompt engineering, you can then get the most out of tools such as ChatGPT and Google Bard.

This involves:

Understanding the different types of prompts you can use
Using the right type of language to achieve your desired outcome
Giving it correct and relevant information so that it fully understands your request
Using proper formatting so it can comprehend what to absorb and what actions to take.

The bottom line is this: If you are lazy with your prompts, the output will be sub-par.

However, if you take time to research and refine your prompts, the output will reward you with high-quality, accurate answers and ideas.

The more you give, the more you get

Even if you use the right prompts, you're not going to get the most out of ChatGPT if you don't do your research. This means understanding your target audience, what they're looking for, and what they need.

The more information you give ChatGPT, the better it will be able to understand your needs and provide you with the results you're looking for.

Here are some tips my team has been implementing to get the most out of ChatGPT:

Be specific and direct. It's important to have a clear description of what you want.
Indicate the desired format of the answer. Is it in paragraph form or a bullet point list?
Utilise instructional prompts. Be generous with adding the right details. The more details added, the more it gives you the right response.
Provide context. Provide background information so ChatGPT will have an idea of where you are coming from. If you are a flower enthusiast wanting to start a flower shop business, indicate that in your prompt.

Set a tone. Do you want your tone to be formal, friendly, inspirational, or even sad? It’s important to set the right tone for the reader to get the right message.
Limit the answer length. If you want the paragraph to be 100 or 250 words long, you must specify it. You can also use prompts like “Explain in three sentences”.
Ask for multiple perspectives. If you want a balanced view or multiple opinions, you can ask AI to provide arguments for and against a topic, or to represent different perspectives.
Role-play. You can ask the AI tool to play a specific character or role. This is often used in creative writing, storytelling, or practicing conversations in different languages.

Use this prompt to help with your copywriting efforts:

Please write a paragraph on the topic of [example topic] for [desired target audience].

Open with an [example] statement, and [develop this idea with links to sources].

Summarise the content while transitioning into the next paragraph, which should focus on [example sub-topic].

Tone: The tone should be [input desired tone].

Length: Please generate [number] paragraphs with a total word count of [input desired word count].

Use this prompt to generate unique ideas for social media:

I want you to act as a Social Media expert and expereinced content creator.

Please generate a list of 5 ideas for engaging social media post on the topic of [example topic]

Tone: The tone should be [input desired tone]

Target audience: [describe your target audience]

Company information: [Give relevant details of your own company / business].
