Points-based immigration system moves a step closer

The Immigration and Social Security Co-ordination (EU Withdrawal) Bill 2020 is due to come into effect in January 2021. It repeals EU freedom of movement and introduces a new points-based framework for who can come to live in the UK. Points will be awarded for being able to speak English to a certain standard, having a job offer from an approved employer, and meeting a salary threshold of £25,600. Other points could be awarded for certain qualifications and if there is a shortage in a particular occupation. citizens from the EU, the EEA EFTA states of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, and their family members, will subject to UK immigration controls.
