SCC calls for social distancing to be eased in manufacturing

Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Scottish Engineering have jointly written to the Scottish Government asking for physical distancing in the manufacturing sector to be reduced and brought into line with other business sectors. Scottish manufacturers need 2m physical distancing but it is 1m in leisure, hospitality retail and transport, and also in the manufacturing sector in England if appropriate safety provisions are in place.

The central case made by SCC and Scottish Engineering is that the manufacturing sector enjoys high space ratios of square metre per employee and it has a highly advanced and deeply embedded health and safety culture and risk-assessed work practices. They point out that Scottish manufacturers are disadvantaged to their peers and competitors in England and Scottish manufacturing productivity is threatened. Jobs are, therefore, at risk, especially when the Furlough scheme ends.
