Students showcase ideas for next stage of The Leven Programme

27th January 2020

Fife College students recently demonstrated their creative ideas for the next stage of an ambitious programme to improve the area around the River Leven.

Web Development students showcased concepts for an interactive app for the programme to members of the project team of ‘The Leven Programme’ at the College’s Glenrothes Campus recently.

Proof of concept 3D models and animations created by Computer Animation students were also presented to members of the project team which included representatives from SEPA, Fife Council and Sustrans.

Using the river as inspiration, students mapped a section of the river catchment and recreated it in a 3D digital format.

Those in attendance were also updated on future plans of how the College will help enhance the programme including a 3D environment laser scan of land near the river. These scans will then be used to showcase further development ideas and alternative layout concepts.

The River Leven Programme is a visionary plan to enhance the whole of the river catchment, from Loch Leven to Leven.

Network Rail representatives were also in attendance at the visit looking at ways in which student work and data captured by the College could be used to help inform the planning stages and public engagement of the future reopening of the Levenmouth rail link.

Students from Fife College have already made a big impact on The Leven Programme with their brand and logo design given the thumbs up last year.

Visual Communications students designed a logo with the tag line ‘growing with the flow’ which is now being used to visually represent the programme and everything associated with it - from the website and publicity materials to t-shirts and recycled pencils.

John Wincott, Environmental Services Coordinator at Fife College said: “We were delighted to welcome representatives from The Leven project team to our Glenrothes Campus recently. The visit was a great opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic work being produced by students which we are sure will continue to enhance the programme going forward.

“The Leven programme continues to offer a unique opportunity for Fife College students to play a leading part in shaping and developing low carbon and environmental initiatives to benefit people in Fife in the future.”

The Leven Programme is a regeneration initiative with the environment and people at its heart.

The programme involves many key government agencies, non-government organisations, private sector and local communities working closely together to help deliver environmental improvements in and around the River Leven in Fife, while maximising the social and economic opportunities that these improvements can bring.

The vision is that by 2030, the partnership approach will have contributed to, and delivered a number of projects that will collectively have helped to breathe new life into the River Leven, improving the areas surrounding it and making them great places to live, work and visit.

Fife College and its talented students are heavily involved in the Programme, using their creative skills in live projects, from creative arts and video production to aerial surveying and graphic design, and on to create products that will enhance the Programme as well as benefitting the environment and local community.
