Schools Attend STEM Event Held at Fife College

Pupils from schools across Scotland celebrated the completion of a ten week science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) competition at a Celebration and Assessment Day held at Fife College recently.

The Go4SET competition, organised by the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) featured S2 pupils from various schools working in teams of six on an environmental project during which they were mentored by industry professionals from local companies. These included Raytheon, Brand Rex, Syngenta, Bosch Rexroth, The Newpark Trust, the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, NCR and TechnipFMC.

The participating schools included, Glenrothes High Schools, Glenwood High School, Grangemouth High School, Inverkeithing High School, Kirkcaldy High School, Larbert High School, Perth High School, St Modan’s High School and Woodmill High School.

The competition gave the pupils an in-depth understanding of STEM, the role it plays in the world we live in and the possible future careers that are available to them.

Each entry proved to be very creative with a variety of different models, posters and exhibition boards highlighting the importance of STEM and the topics that had featured throughout the competition. At the Celebration and Assessment Day they were asked to present their innovative ideas to a panel of judges, which included students from Fife College’s HND Petroleum Engineering course and industry experts from EDT, Raytheon and Morrisons.

Various prizes were awarded on the day: ‘Best Teamwork’ was awarded to Kirkcaldy High School, the ‘Pupils’ Choice Award’ went to Woodmill High School and the overall prize for producing the most innovative project was won by Grangemouth High School. The team will get the opportunity to compete in the National Final in June.

Bill Hutchison, Curriculum Manager for Electrical, Electronic and Petroleum at Fife College was delighted with the success of the event and the standard of work produced by the pupils. Said Bill: “We have had a great pleasure of hosting Go4SET for many years now and we still continue to be amazed by the increasing standards achieved by the participating pupils who go from having little to zero knowledge to producing professional projects and presentations in only ten weeks.”
