A spotlight on Kirkcaldy Town Centre this Christmas

22nd November 2023

Kirkcaldy can again look forward to the town centre lights being switched on, thanks to a partnership between Fife Council, Love Oor Lang Toun and K107FM

Called ‘Kirkcaldy’s Christmas Spot Lights’, the event plans to bring people in to the town centre to celebrate the start of the Christmas season, and see what local businesses have to offer.

Local children have been making their own Christmas lanterns in the Mercat Shopping centre over the past few weeks, and there is still time to take part with another session this Saturday 25th November between 10 and 4pm

Youngsters and their parents will be able to collect them on Saturday 2nd December at the Kings Theatre Kirkcaldy, with a parade route for families heading from the Esplanade outside the venue, up Redburn Wynd, through the Merchants Quarter and onto the switch-on of the lights at 4.30pm on the High Street pedestrianised area outside the main entrance to the Mercat Shopping Centre.

The countdown for the switch-on will be led by the characters of the Kings Theatre Kirkcaldy panto, Ya Wee Beauty and the Beastie.

Local radio station K107FM will be broadcasting the event live, and shining a spotlight on local businesses and stakeholders in the run up to the event and beyond

December 2nd will also see the start of Love Oor Lang Toun’s #TinselTenner promotion, with local businesses providing seasonal offerings for just £10. Love Oor Lang Toun and K107FM will continue to shine a spotlight on the wealth of local independent businesses and offerings throughout the Christmas period.

Other festivities will include a Candy Cane trail around local shops running from Thursday 30th November to Sunday 3rd December with a prize of a £100 Kirkcaldy Gift Card for the winner alongside £100 for their nominated charity in the Kirkcaldy Area. There will also be smaller spot prizes on the evening of the Kirkcaldy’s Christmas Spotlights event with local community groups helping out.

Kirkcaldy Amateur Operatic Society (KAOS) and other local musical groups will be providing a choir, and there will be a local piper leading the parade along with Santa and a sleigh provided by the Kirkcaldy Rotary Club. Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society will be playing in the Mercat Shopping Centre between 11am and 1.15pm.

There will be a full road closure for Kirk Wynd and the High Street through the Merchants Quarter on Dec 2nd from 15:00 – 18:30

Chair of Love Oor Lang Toun, Christine May, said:

“Over the next two weeks we will be unveiling more of what is planned for Kirkcaldy’s Christmas Spot Lights. Not only do we want to put on a good, locally based event for the people of Kirkcaldy, but we want them to see what local businesses throughout the Town Centre have to offer for Christmas. Whether that is a local independent shop, or one of the many fine coffee shops and eating places in our town centre, we encourage you to see what is on your doorstep and make the most of this Christmas.”

Alex Airnes, K107FM Programming Team, said:

“We’re delighted to be working with Love Oor Lang Toun and Fife Council once again.Last years event had a real community feel to it. We’re looking to harness the power of local radio to bring the event into homes of those in our area who won’t be able to attend the event in person”
