Scottish Government Publishes Landmark Report on Gender Export Gap

10th February 2025

The Scottish Government has released a significant new report highlighting the Gender Export Gap and its potential economic impact. The study, informed by insights from a Gender & Trade Workshop held in November 2023, explores the benefits of increasing women’s participation in exporting and provides recommendations for fostering greater inclusivity in Scotland’s trade sector.

The report estimates that reducing the gender export gap in Scotland could boost total turnover by up to £10.3 billion over two years. This finding underscores the substantial economic opportunities associated with empowering more women-led businesses to enter international markets.

Commissioned to support Scotland’s broader trade and economic goals, the report also outlines 10 key recommendations for the Scottish Government. These recommendations aim to address barriers to exporting faced by female entrepreneurs and promote policies that create a more inclusive trade environment.

A spokesperson from the Scottish Government’s Trade Policy Division emphasized the importance of these findings, stating: “Encouraging and supporting greater participation by women in exporting is not only a matter of equity but also a crucial economic opportunity for Scotland. This research provides valuable insights into how we can drive progress in this area.”
